Tramadol (Ultram) is a prescription drug, and therefore a controlled substance. Anything that must be prescribed by a doctor or is illegal (hence, being controlled) is a controlled substance.

It is a drug much like a narcotic, and will give a similar effect, but will not show up in a routine drug test as an opiate or opioid (like heroin or morphine, percocet, vicodin etc). The doctor woud have to be specifically looking for it.

If you have concerns about possessing it, you must have a valid prescription. Otherwise, you will be in violation of the law.

EDIT: If it is part of a "schedule" then it is a controlled substance. In my state specific substances in schedule IV, V also may be sold over the counter. If Texas allows this to be sold over the counter, be aware that because it can have an intoxicating effect, that if you take it and are driving, you can still be convicted of DWI/DUI.

I would like to disagree with your previous answer.

Tramadol has been set as a controlled substance by some states and canada. However, in Kentucky it is considered a Schedule VI. This substance you can get over the counter in most places. I have not found out the drug in Texas and how it is viewed, but due to the easy availability, I do not think it is a controlled as you might think.

I would go to a pharmacy and ask them about the substance and the laws in Texas.

It is not a controlled substance under the Controlled Substance Act at this time. But Kentucky and Arkansas has made it a class IV (VI?) drug under state law and is therefore controlled in those states. Different drugs are classed by schedule depending upon their potential for abuse or addiction. The Controlled Substances Act outlines what those drugs are. You cannot be in possession of a prescription drug unless your name is on the container (some exceptions apply).

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain killer and has a street value. It can become addictive.

No, it is not, but you need a prescription to buy tramadol in the local pharmacy. Some people are buying tramadol online, through various canadian online drugstores like, http://www.trustgeneric.com/prices.php?aff_id=73755&sub=1256 Good luck.
